Smokers urged to take part in a ‘Big Sheffield Sponsored Quit’
3rd August 2009
The NHS Sheffield Stop Smoking Service is urging Sheffield people to follow in the footsteps of Elaine Facer, the 62 year-old Sheffield lady who has raised £250 for Neurocare by getting her family and friends to sponsor her to quit smoking.
Elaine, as featured on the front page of the Sheffield Star on Thursday, lost her husband to Neurofibromatosis, a rare genetic condition. She contacted the NHS Sheffield Stop Smoking Service to gain their help to quit when she decided to start raising money for the charity.
Now the Stop Smoking Service is encouraging other smokers in the city to follow Elaine’s good example, and give themselves double the motivation to quit smoking – not only will they improve their own health and finances, but they could also be raising money for their favourite charity.
Claire Holden, NHS Sheffield Stop Smoking Service Manager said: “I love Elaine’s idea of getting friends and family to sponsor her to stop smoking – it’d be great if more people in the city decided to follow her example – a ‘Big Sheffield Sponsored Quit’!
“Stopping smoking using our service means you are four times more likely to succeed than if you try to stop cold turkey. With the added motivation of not wanting to let down your friends and family who’ve sponsored you and the charity you’re raising money for – you’ll have great chances of success.
“And what’s more – if you’ve got friends and family who are always trying to get you to stop smoking, this is your chance to get them to put their money where their mouth is!”
