Health
experts in Sheffield are welcoming budget
announcements of an 8p rise on the price
of cigarettes. The Living in Britain household
survey results report that 1 in 4 people
aged 16 and over smoke, with cigarette smoking
more common among men than women.
Staff from the Sheffield
NHS Stop Smoking Service hope that the rise
in price will deter people from smoking,
and encourage them to give up with the help
of the Stop Smoking Service.
Malcolm Simpson,
Manager of the Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking
Service said: ”The increase in the
price of cigarettes means the 40-a-day smoker
faces an extra £58.40 each year. By
stopping smoking, the 40-a-day smoker can
save a massive £3,255.80 over a year
– enough to buy a round the world
cruise.
“While the
number of smokers in the UK remains steady,
the Living in Britain survey shows there
are still 1 in 4 people who smoke, and their
smoking will have an impact on people around
them. We are encouraging people to see the
benefits of giving up smoking, and can provide
them with free support through which to
do so.”
Evidence from the
British Medical Association shows that a
10% increase in tobacco taxation can lead
to a 4% reduction in tobacco use.
The NHS Service in
Sheffield currently provides specialist
support through city-wide quit groups or
one-to-one services for people wanting to
give up.
