Following
the recent success of National No Smoking
Day, Sheffield's NHS Stop Smoking Service
is launching a city centre drop-in programme,
to help people quit in time for Easter. To
provide an extra boost, free nicotine replacement
therapy is being offered on the day, to everyone
who commits to quitting. Starting
on Saturday 19th March, anybody can drop
in to the free sessions at St Matthews Church
Hall on Carver Street, every Saturday until
7th May between 10am and 2pm. No appointment
is necessary.
At the drop in centre,
smokers can get free advice from specially
trained NHS stop smoking advisors, as well
as being able to sign up for groups, one-to-one
or telephone based support programmes.
Everyone attending
the drop in event will be offered a free
one-week supply of nicotine replacement
therapy to get them started. Further NRT
will be provided on prescription for the
remainder of the programme.
Malcolm Simpson of
the Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Service said:
"This year's National No Smoking Day
was our most successful yet - with a record
number of Sheffield smokers signing up for
our quit programmes.
"We're determined
to build on our recent success with the
free city centre drop in event, which makes
it even easier for smokers to get the advice
and support they need to help them quit."
"More than half
the smokers who commence a quit programme
with the NHS Stop Smoking Service become
successful quitters. This is hugely more
successful then smokers who attempt to quit
by themselves."
As an added incentive,
everyone who quits through the service will
be given free vouchers, which can be redeemed
at any Sheffield International Venues site,
for ice skating, swimming, gym or dancing
sessions.
