Sheffield
NHS Stop Smoking Service is marking World
No Tobacco Day, on Tuesday May 31st, by
offering smokers free support and advice
to help them give up, and providing training
and advice to health professionals, so they
can support patients who want to quit.
World No Tobacco
Day, which is run annually by the World
Health Organisation (WHO), was established
in 1988, to help reduce tobacco related
deaths throughout the world.
This year, in recognition
of the UKs role in reducing worldwide tobacco
use, the entire global event will be launched
in London, and broadcast throughout the
world via the internet.
One of the reasons
the WHO chose to launch World No Tobacco
Day in the UK is the success of NHS Stop
Smoking Services throughout the country.
Since they were formed,
NHS Stop Smoking Services have helped over
half a million people quit smoking.
In Sheffield alone,
Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Service had contact
with over 10,000 people during the last
year, with nearly 5,000 smokers setting
a quit date, and over 2,500 stopping smoking,
which is a 70% increase on the previous
year.
Malcolm Simpson of
the Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Service said:
“We’re delighted that World
No Tobacco Day is being launched in the
UK, as its testament to the hard work and
determination of health professionals throughout
the country, to reduce tobacco related deaths.
“It also shows
that health professionals throughout the
city have continued to refer people to the
service, and we’re confident they’ll
continue to help smokers find the support
and advice they need.”
He added: “World
No Tobacco Day is the perfect time for people
to contact the Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking
Service, and find out about our comprehensive
range of quit programmes, offering telephone,
one to one and group support.
“As part of
the programme most smokers are also offered
nicotine replacement products, such as patches,
on prescription.”
