PARENTS QUIT FOR BABY DAUGHTER - August 2005

Two Sheffield parents are celebrating the birth of their daughter, after she provided the inspiration they needed to give up smoking.

Martyn and Ellen Stonecliffe-Jones, of Beauchief, both gave up smoking with the help of the Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Midwifery Service after Ellen became pregnant with baby Betsy.

The couple, who had been smokers since their teens, found that regular contact with an NHS Specialist Midwife and mutual support from each other helped them give up for good.

The Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Midwifery Service provides one-to-one sessions for mothers-to-be and their families, where they can see specially trained midwifes who will meet the quitter at a time and place to suit them, usually in the comfort of their own home.

Jane Grice, Specialist Midwife for the Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Service, said: “It’s great that Martyn and Ellen supported each other and made this positive change, not only to their lives, but also the life of their daughter.

“It’s essential for all expecting mothers to discuss smoking, so they are put in touch with a Midwife to help in supporting them quit. The one-to-one support we can provide has enabled us to help many parents-to-be in Sheffield give up smoking.”

Martyn, a Civil Engineer, said: “Ellen and I both used to smoke 20 cigarettes a day, but the support we received from Jane helped us do the best thing for Betsy. Giving up wasn’t as hard as we thought as we had the added incentive of a new family member to look forward to.”

“We have recently moved house, and the money we saved from stopping smoking is nearly enough to cover the mortgage alone. With the extra cash we can afford to redecorate and in a little over 6 months we have managed save up £2500.”

He added: “I feel a lot healthier and Ellen, who used to have lots of colds, doesn’t really get any now. We have already recommended the service to our friends; if we can do it so can they.”

For free support and advice to stop smoking contact the Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Service on freephone 0800 068 4490.
