The good work done by Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Service in helping people give up smoking, has been highlighted at a regional conference run by the Department of Health.
Specialist Stop Smoking Midwives, Pam Hancock and Jane Grice, gave a special talk to over 120 health professionals on the success of the NHS Stop Smoking Service in Sheffield. In their presentation they particularly praised Sheffield GP’s and Obstetricians who have referred smokers to the service, helping hundreds of people, including pregnant women and their families, to quit the habit for good.
The Smoking and Pregnancy Conference, held in York, provided information on the impact of smoking on pregnancy, and highlighted examples of best practice in the region.
NHS Stop Smoking programmes are offered by 63 GP surgeries in Sheffield, and this year, they have helped 564 people quit for good.
Pam Hancock, Specialist Stop Smoking Service Midwife, said: “The Smoking and Pregnancy Conference gave us a chance to highlight the good work that goes on in Sheffield, and we were particularly keen to commend local GP’s for their role in referring smokers to the service and providing Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT).
“Stopping smoking is the single most important decision expectant parents can make for the health of their unborn child. The one-to-one support we provide in Sheffield has enabled us to help many parents-to-be in the city give up smoking.”
The Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Midwifery Service provides one-to-one sessions with specially trained midwives, who will arrange to meet the quitter at a time and place to suit them, usually in the comfort of their own home. The service offers support for mums-to-be and their families over a number of weeks, helping them stay stopped and giving advice on how to resist cravings.
The Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Service offers effective programmes in a variety of formats throughout the city. All programmes include nicotine replacement therapy, such as patches, on NHS prescription.
