Quitting
smoking is a sure-fire way to gain pounds
in cash, but a new resource from the Sheffield
NHS Stop Smoking Service aims to dispel
the myth that kicking the habit can add
pounds to your weight.
Former smokers and those looking to quit
smoking in the near future, who are worried
about their weight, can now get access to
a new information leaflet called 'Look Good,
Feel Good! - Will I Gain Weight When I Stop
Smoking?'
The leaflet provides:
practical tips on how people can avoid turning
to food as an alternative to craving cigarettes;
easy ways to integrate simple physical activities
into a busy lifestyle; healthy eating tips;
and also details of how quickly you will
feel the benefits of stopping smoking.

Chantil Wood, Lead Nurse for the Sheffield
NHS Stop Smoking Service, said: "It
is a common misconception that when you
stop smoking you will gain weight, as many
people who quit do not gain any weight at
all. The key to looking good and feeling
good, is eating a healthy, balanced diet,
staying active, and staying stopped".
"We know from our experience that
most people don't want to stop smoking as
an end in itself. They do it because they
know it affects their health badly, and
quitting is part of a pattern of lifestyle
change that also involves trying to eat
more healthily and becoming more active.
We recognise that and provide help with
making those changes as part of our programmes,
as outlined in our new leaflet. The programmes
are completely free and are very effective."
The Sheffield NHS Stop Smoking Service
offers effective programmes in a variety
of formats throughout the city, and includes
nicotine replacement therapy, such as patches,
on NHS prescription.
